Maxell Japan – Powering Innovation Since 1960

Maxell, Ltd., founded in 1960 (as a spin-off from Nitto Electric in Osaka), took its name from the phrase “Maximum Capacity Dry Cell,” reflecting its early mission to create high-performance batteries. Over the decades, Maxell grew beyond dry batteries into a vanguard of battery technologies—spanning alkaline, lithium-ion, and micro-sized power cells. In 1996, Maxell ventured into the lithium-ion battery arena, producing prismatic cells that became widely used in mobile phones, gaming consoles, and portable electronics. However, as the market shifted toward laminated battery formats, Maxell strategically chose to exit the prismatic lithium-ion segment in 2025 and instead focus on pioneering all-solid-state battery technology. Even more impressively, Maxell embraced the next frontier in battery innovation: sulfide-based small-size all-solid-state batteries. Aiming to be the world’s first to mass-produce these compact, high-performance cells, Maxell targets applications ranging from industrial equipment and medical devices to extreme-environment sensors, with full-scale production expected by 2023–2026.
